Pizhichil is recommended for diseases caused by a vitiation of the Vata humour- Pakshagliata (Hemiplegia), paralysis and muscle spasms and other degenerative diseases that affect the muscles.

Panchakarma

Panchakarma actually is a group of treatments, five in number, all of which are not commonly practised in all diseases. The panchakarma are Vamana, Virechana, Nasya, Vasti. and Rektamosham.

Vamana Karma Ė Emetics Therapy

It is the most suitable therapy for kaphaja (Mucous) disorders. In this method the specific doshas are eliminated from body through mouth (oral route). It involves induced and controlled vomiting with the help of medicines. It is used to treat chronic asthma, chronic hyperacidity etc.

Virechana Karma (PurgationTherapy)

This therapy is mainly used in cases of chronic disorders due to Pitta dosha. It involves induced and controlled purgation with the help of medicines. It is used to treat jaundice, chronic helminthes cases etc.

Nasya Karma

Nasya Karma is administration of drug through nose. This is an important therapy in Panchakarma. Nose is the gateway to brain. Herbal juice and medicated oils are applied through nostrils. Nasyakarma treatment is very effective in major diseases of the head. Nasya is used in cases of migraine, chronic rhinitis, epilepsy etc.

Vasti - Medicated Enema

Involves administering medicines as enema. The medicines used can be decoctions, pure / formulated oils, milk etc. It is used to cure arthritis, backache etc.

Rakta Mokshana - Blood letting

According to Sushruta, certain diseases are caused by vitiation of the blood. He recommended bloodletting to get rid of the vitiated blood. Bloodletting was usually carried out with the help of precise surgical instruments or by leeching.

Abhyangam

Abhyanga means 'oil massage'. In Abhyanga, medicated oil is massaged all over the body. Special type of oil massage in which strokes are given according to the diseases for 45 minutes per day for 7 days to 21 days. This treatment is very useful for Rheumatism, especially for Diabetic gangerene (a condition due to lack of blood circulation in the extremities of the body) etc.

The Droni is the wooden bed on which the patient is made to lie while undergoing treatment. Special care is to be taken for padabhyanga or foot massage. The marmas or vital points on the soles of the feet are closely related with certain internal organs.

Snehana (Oiltherapy)

'Snehana' means oil. 'Snehana' is the term used for oleation or the application of oil. Oil may be administered either internally or externally. Application of herbal oil in either way saturates the body and loosens up the glutinous Amam that has accumulated in the Dhatus / tissues. Vegetable oils, ghee (clarified butter), animal fats and fat from bone marrow are the substances used for oleation. Ghee and sesame oil to which various herbs have been added are commonly used.

Pizhichil

Lukewarm medicated oil is applied on the body of the patient lying on the "Dharapathi". Oil dipped pieces of cloth are squeezed by hand and the oils rubbed smoothly over the body of the patient by Measures on either side. The medicated oil is pressed out of the cloth uniformly over the body at a defined height and massaged by skillful hands. Fresh medicated oil is used every day and the treatment may last seven or twenty one days. Pizhichil is recommended for diseases caused by a vitiation of the Vata humour- Pakshagliata (Hemiplegia), paralysis and muscle spasms and other degenerative diseases that affect the muscles.

Uzhichil

This whole body deep muscle massage with oil is a very relaxing technique. It gives all the benefits of Abhyanga and tones the muscles. Uzhichil regulates the flow of energy within the body and improves circulation. Fresh medicated oil is used every day and the treatment may last seven or twenty one days.

Ilakkizhi (Patrasweda)

Patra and Ila mean leaf. 'Kizhi' means "bundle'. 'llakkizhi' or Patrasweda is a kind of sudation therapy using herbal leaves. Various Herbal Leaves are chopped and mixed with grated coconut and mustard. Prior to fomentation, oil is applied to the crown. As sudation is the primary aim of fomentation, the kizhis have to be kept at a constant high temperature by warming them every now and then. In rheumatic pains and associated swelling of the joints, fomentation and massage with Ilakkizhi (bundles containing leaves) bring relief. Fresh medicated oil is used every day and the treatment may last seven or twenty one days.

Navarakkizhi

Navarakkizhi involves massaging of the body with small linen bags filled with Navara (Shastika), after a liberal application of medicated oils. Navara Kizhi is also of great benefit to those with atrophy of the muscles, arthritis, weakness of the extremities, tremors and fibromyalgia. This treatment will benefit from this treatmentís anti-aging effects and its ability to prevent disease.

Podikkizhi (Choornasweda)

Podikkizhi is a method of therapeutic sweating. The body is fomented thoroughly with linen bags (kizhis) containing herbal drugs in powdered form. As moderate heat is required to sweat the body, the kizhis have to be warmed up by heating them in a pan smeared with medicated oil. Podikkizhi is good for ailments due to disrupted Vata and Kapha doshas

Bashpasweda

Bashpasweda (bashpa means steam) is a type of sudation therapy. In this treatment herbal steam is applied evenly to the entire body. Bashpasweda is good treatment for Rheumatism and Obesity.

Sirodhara

Sirodhara is the best treatment for diseases of the nervous system and for emotional problems such as chronic depression and anxiety (panic). It is also recommended for chronic headaches, as well as ear, nose and throat problems, and is especially useful for pain management.

During this treatment there is a constant flow of herbal preparations on the forehead. Medicated oil, medicated butter milk , cows milk are allowed to freely flow over the upper part of the fore head continuously for specific periods This process stimulates the part of the brain known as the pineal gland. Among its other functions, the pineal gland produces serotonin and melatonin. These hormones play an important role in each person's emotional balance, and melatonin is also known to have an anti-aging quality.

Netradhara

Netradhara Extracts of herbs that possess preventive and curative properties are used for Netradhara. A stream of herbal extract is gently poured into the eyes of the patient who lies on the droni. The patient is made to lie on both sides in order that both eyes are thoroughly washed.

Sarvangadhara

After massaging the body for a while, in sitting position, the patient is made to lie on the treatment table and the cloth pieces dipped in medicated oil are squeezed all over the body followed by massage. This should be done in 7 positions. The slow massage is done without exerting much pressure. The oil is to be heated every now and then,to maintain the warmth. After the treatment mild massage is given followed by hot water bath. This treatment is good for Arthritis, Hemeplgia, Body ache, Weakness and Fractures.

Kativasthi

In this process specially prepared warm medicated oil is kept over the lower back with herbal paste boundary. This treatment lasts for 45 minutes to 1 hour and it is good for any type of back pain and spinal disorders.

Urovasthi

Warm medicated oil is kept over the chest for 45 minutes. This is an effective treatmentfor asthma, other respiratory problems, heart diseases and muscular chest pain.

Sirovasti

This is a treatment which gives extraordinary relief from all ailments connected with vata in the head. In this, medicated oil is poured in to a leather cap which is fixed over the head. The patient is made to sit on a chair. Oil is applied on his head, body and mild massage is given .The prepared black gram paste is applied over a bandage cloth and tied it around the head. Leather cap should be kept over the head. The inner part of the leather cap is smeared by black gram paste. Medicated oil is made to lukewarm and poured in to the leather cap. This should be changed repeatedly to maintain the constant temperature. The leather cap and the oil is removed after 45 minutes. Mild massage is given to the neck and the shoulder of the patient after that hot water bath is given to the patient. This treatment is good for facial paralysis, Head ache, Cataract, Earache, Deafness.

Upanaham

This is a process by which medicated herbal paste is applied on the affected part of the body. Very useful for various types of inflammatory and spastic conditions, the therapy is for 90 minutes to 2 hours per day for 7 to 14 days.

Pichu

Pichu is a palliative treatment for ailments of the head. A long piece of cloth (pichu) folded thickly and broader than the forehead is fixed around the head just above the ear level. A hole nearly one and a half inches wide is made in the front of the band. After preparatory procedures like an oil massage, the prescribed oil is applied on the head. A piece of cotton wad drenched in medicated oil is placed in the hole and allowed to remain there for some time. This process is repeated for a specific duration. Pichu, one of the Purvakarma therapy is considered effective for diseases of the cranial nerves arising from Vata disorder.

Tharpanam Ayurvedic Therapy

This is said to improve eye sight, strengthen the optic nerve and prevent different eye diseases. It is basically an eye-cleansing process and gives a cooling effect to eyes. During tharpanam, the medicated oil is retained over the eye which is bordered with a thick herbal combination that prevents the oil from seeping out of the enclosure.
